Was really pleased to read in the News-Journal today that a Florida Historic Marker has been placed at the Historic DeLand Courthouse. DeLand is the county seat for Volusia County. This courthouse was built in 1929 at a cost of $500,000. At the time that would have been the primary courthouse for Volusia County. Stetson University had their law school there at that time, since moved to St. Petersburg. A new County Courthouse opened in 2001 and the old one was renovated. Fortunately some court related activities are still conducted there periodically, although almost everything court related is done at the new courthouse. I spent a lot of time there, and tried cases there. I have always enjoyed going there. The main courtroom definitely has the “To Kill a Mockingbird” courtroom look and feel. A beautiful building. If you’re in the area you should walk inside and check it out. The photo is from the Florida Archives, Memory Project.
